tomorrow’s toys

The brief was simple: redesign WowWee’s MiP toy robot to reduce its environmental impact by at least 50%. After taking the MiP apart completely and analyzing it top-to-bottom, it became clear that the biggest challenge was to also give the MiP a purpose.

The new MiP would take pictures of its young users whenever the parents decide - either in automatic increments or via a Bluetooth-connected mobile app. With the MiP, children two to four can record candid memories while playing with the toy.

In terms of engineering and manufacturing, the MiP v2 would use a motorized rolling ball that balanced a figure on top. This cut down on the mechanized components, which also decreased the overall weight of the package. The new version also uses as many recycled materials as possible.

the MiP, evolved

The MiP version 2 is smaller, lighter, and more energy efficient. It reduces the original MiP’s impact on the environment by more than 68%! The v2 increases the product’s life cycle by adding sentimental value for the children who play with it, as well as their parents.

Moreover, multiple parts can be downloaded and 3D printed from the customers’ home. This extends the MiP’s life cycle, and allows the company to add another revenue stream - selling the custom colorways online - while avoiding many added costs to the business.
