Our brief was to create an application that would enhance the chemotherapy treatment.

While meditation is rather low-tech, medical research shows benefits include increased pain tolerance, alleviated depression and anxiety, and is also linked to increased chromosome telomere length. (The longer a cell’s telomeres, the healthier and more resilient it is.)

We thought: this could be an opportunity to design a mobile app that gives you tools to control your state of mind, thereby alleviating pain and suffering.

Drawing from our research and interviews, we brainstormed various ways in which meditation can improve the chemotherapy experience.

One major hurdle involved the vast differences the treatment has on patients. How do we accomodate different patients’ schedules, progress levels, and physical tolerances?

Om uses an algorithm to work around the user’s chemotherapy schedule and calculates the type, intensity, and frequecy of meditation sessions. The settings can be found through the main menu or even while in a meditation session.

Om has a combination of three different types mediation and several sound and light settings, which allows for a fully customizable experience.

The meditation sessions can be manually changed in the user’s calendar. While in a meditation session, the main menu can instantly be accessed by swiping the top tab down, while the settings can be accessed by swiping the bottom tab up.
